Is Floyd Mayweather Really Done?

Floyd Mayweather surprised many with his retirement from professional boxing after his final bout with Andre Berto, which he won by unanimous decision. The win against Berto capped off a rather impressive career for “Money Mayweather”, as he finished his career with a 49-0 record. It still remains controversial as to whether Mayweather is one of the all time greats, as he has only fought 49 times. Also, the quality of his opponents has often been questioned, even after he defeated Manny Pacquiao. He avoided fighting Pacman for many years and many people believe Pacquiao could have defeated Floyd if they had fought five years ago, but the world will never know. Floyd’s accomplishments don’t compare to Muhammed Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Louis, but Floyd was still a great boxer. However, I don’t think he’s done.

Floyd is extremely arrogant. Maybe the most arrogant athlete the world has ever seen. He flaunts money like its his job and generally doesn’t care what people think about him, which is something you have to admire. In a special with ESPN leading up to his fight with Manny Pacquiao, Floyd displayed his full arsenal. He bragged about his cars and his house among other things. It’s pretty disgusting. If Floyd is actually done, I think he’ll be scared to fall out of the limelight and he won’t be able to flaunt his successes as much as he does now.

Along with his arrogance and ignorance, Floyd is also very competitive. He prepares like no other and it shows in his work in the ring. Outside of the ring its all glitz and glamour, but once he steps in the training room or the ring, he’s all business.

Mayweather is also addicted to money. He’s obsessed with money and he shows it, obviously. He blows through his money like nobody else in sports. Boxers are like golfers, they don’t play much, but when they do and succeed, the payday is gigantic. I think that will be the final thing that keeps him coming back. He can’t live without the money. Floyd has all the money in the world and his brand, The Money Team, certainly rakes in the dough. But Floyd has never been one to settle, he always wants more. In the fight against Pacquiao, Mayweather made somewhere from 220 million to 230 million!!!! That’s absolutely unreal for less than an hour in the ring.

Floyd Mayweather has had a tumultuous career. With controversy at every stage of his career, Floyd will be a legend. He’s been in the news for good and bad. For now, he’ll be out of the news. But don’t be shocked if the next time you hear about Floyd, he announces his return to boxing.
