“The biggest upset in sports history” is what ESPN’s Brett Okamoto dubbed Holly Holm’s win over Ronda Rousey as after the two squared off at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. Now I’m not going to pretend that I follow UFC or even watched this fight but I do know that this was a massive upset. I know that Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino lost a lot due to the low risk high reward bets placed on Holly Holm. The betting odds for Rousey were roughly 1-9, which is for every $900 placed, you could win $100 and the odds for Holm were 6-1 meaning for every $100 bet, you could win $600. (Disclaimer, that is how I understand it from research, I could be wrong since I don’t know how it works) According to Westgate, Holm was bet on five times as often as Ronda Rousey.
I saw a tweet from @SportsCenter after the fight, and I have absolutely no idea what it meant but I’m pretty sure that it says nobody expected Holm to defeat Rousey.
Like I said I didn’t watch the fight but I did see the kick from Holm that led to the knockout and it looked vicious. We will see how long Rousey needs to heal, or if she’ll want a rematch. The sporting world awaits your next move Ronda Rousey.
