Patrick Kane has always been a player who loves the spotlight. On and off the ice, for better or for worse, he’s always in the news. Back in his early days in the league, Kane was known for being the party type. He partied with Jimmy Buffet, in the back of a limo in Vancouver, and showed up hammered to a Stanley Cup parade after he had scored the game winning goal to beat the Philadelphia Flyers. This offseason, Kane was the suspect of a rape investigation but was not charged. This NHL season however, Kane seems to be putting all his past issues behind him.
Patrick Kane has been playing like best player in the world the last two seasons. Before getting injured last season, Kane had 64 points in 61 games and was among the league leaders in points when he went down.
This year, the Buffalo native has just been ridiculous. Kane leads the NHL in points with 41 in just 26 games. He holds a six point lead over Jamie Benn, who has 35 points. Kane is second to Benn in goals with 16. But the Chicago winger leads the NHL in assists with 25, just edging out Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators. Kane is on pace to shatter his personal best of 88 points, set all the way back in the ’09-’10 season.
The eight year veteran is still improving though. Still in his prime years at age 27, the former number one pick has showed improvement in the defensive zone, and it’s showed in his +/- rating. Kane is already at +11, which would tie his second highest mark of his career. Kaner is also becoming less shot happy in recent years, and his 17% shooting percentage would be a career high if it stood. P-Kane already has nine power play goals to his credit, compared to six last season. All around, Patrick Kane has been the best player in the NHL to this point.
Patrick Kane has always impressed people with his puck skills. He’s scored 20+ goals in each year of his career. He’s dangerous when he gets the puck on his stick, wherever he is on the ice. He’s instant offense and an instant threat to put the puck in the back of the net. Kane is among the league leaders in every major statistical category, something Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin can’t even say. Those two players are consistently named as top players in the league. But if Kane can keep up his rapid scoring pace, there could finally be a new king at the top of the league. Kane is the early candidate for MVP, and for my money, it’s not even close.
