Yesterday, Bubba Watson earned his 9th career win on the PGA Tour. Winning at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles has moved him up to 11th in the FedEx Cup standings. Bubba beat a quality field this past week and had to come from behind on the back nine after Jason Kokrak established a two shot lead late in Sundays round. The likes of major winners Bubba Watson, Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy along with world number 8, Dustin Johnson, were all gunning for the top spot on Sunday. McIlroy faded with some early bogeys and Dustin could never quite get it going either. Scott had a share of the lead on the back nine but a couple of bogeys late ended his chances. Kokrak had played a nearly perfect round thru 14 holes and had a two shot lead. The long hitter then bogeyed the 15th hole and proceeded to par the last 3 holes. Bubba on the other hand hit some stellar shots coming down the stretch and birdied both 16 and 17 to take a one shot lead going into 18. Both Watson and Kokrak had good looks at birdies on 18 and with Kokrak putting first, he had an opportunity to put pressure on Bubba. He missed and allowed Bubba to two putt for a win. Bubba has had success at Riviera CC including a win in 2014.
It was a busy week for Bubba who in addition to winning a golf tournament, brought his son to hang out with Justin Bieber (his son is 3), appeared on an episode of “Girl Meets World” and went to the Warriors- Clippers game Saturday night. That’s typical Bubba. The guy just like to have fun and his golf game reflects that.
Shot of the Day: Bubba came to the par 3, 16th one shot down. He left the 16th hole tied. On the par 3, Bubba hit a dart to 5 feet and made the putt to tie Kokrak and gain momentum going into the par 5, 17th hole.
Looking ahead: Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Florida and PGA National for the Honda Classic. The field incudes Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, Zach Johnson, Patrick Reed, Adam Scott and Brooks Koepka. I would love to a McIlroy, Reed and Fowler pairing on Thursday and Friday.
Prediction: I think McIlroy will rebound from a poor Sunday with a win next week at PGA National.
