Combine testing starts tomorrow, and with that comes the “workout warriors”. These players are the most gifted physically among all prospects and normally warrant a high draft pick. Players such as Patrick Peterson, Cam Newton and Chris Johnson have all been combine stars before they found success in the NFL, and this year, one top-5 prospect could turn in a great performance as head-turning as these players before him.
Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey has been nothing short of a star in his three-year college career, and scouts have been enamored with his physical gifts since he arrived in Tallahassee. Ramsey has played safety, corner, and special teams during his time with the ‘Noles, and has shown of his physical gifts at all three positions.
One of Ramsey’s greatest attributes is his speed; to seem him run anything slower than 4.4 would be shocking. He posses great straightline speed, which should translate into one of the more impressive 40 yard dashes this year, and it will help him stay with receivers on vertical routes. His speed was best put on display in special teams as a gunner in punting situations. Ramsey consistently outran everyone on the field by around ten yards. This can be best seen against Clemson two years ago on this play.
Ramsey should also put up huge numbers in both the broad and vertical jump. These two events may end up being his best after he won the long jump in the ACC Championship for both indoor and outdoor track last year. Some scouts even believe that he has a chance to break the combine record in broad jump set by Byron Jones last year.
Ramsey is a top-5 prospect with tantalizing upside. Although he has struggled with coverage techniques at times, he has more than made up for it with his natural talent. He has the ability to be the top ranked performer in every test for defensive backs, if not the entire combine, and his performance in a couple of days could cement him as the can’t-miss prospect of the draft.
