Martavis Bryant Faces Year Long Suspension

Over the weekend it was announced that Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Martavis Bryant will be facing a year long suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.  This news is a huge blow to the Steelers’ offense despite already having premiere talent in Antonio Brown, Le’veon Bell, and Ben Roethlisberger. Bryant is a scoring machine that has found the end zone when the Steelers need it most and is a matchup nightmare.

News of Bryant’s suspension should have both fans on the front office extremely worried based on his past. He missed the first 4 games of this past season for violating the substance abuse policy and it was reported that his failed drug tests are from the use of marijuana. Over the summer he spent a short time in Houston to overcome his reported drug problem and seemed fine following his suspension but with this news possible suspension real problems may be coming. According to the NFL a player must fail a drug test 6 times before facing the possibility of a year long suspension. With this many failed tests the young receiver may have some serious issues. According to multiple reports his agent has said that Bryant will be checking into rehab for depression and drug addiction while he waits for the league to decide on his status for next season.

The story of Bryant’s drug use and his back to back suspensions come in the wake of Josh Gordon’s second missed season because of marijuana use and their career paths are on very similar trajectories right now. If Bryant cannot solve the issues he currently faces he may end up in the same situation Gordon is in as the former Browns’ receiver waits to find out if he can be reinstated into the NFL.
