The 5 Greatest Moments on Hole 17 at TPC Sawgrass

The PGA Tour stops at TPC Sawgrass this weekend for The Players Championship. This is one of the most exciting weeks of the year. The Players Championship is often referred to as golf’s 5th major. The course demands the best of the players and creates some exciting golf. One of the most exciting holes on the course is the par three, 17th hole. This hole is usually just a wedge or 9 iron for most players but the green is surrounded by water. This is truly one of the most exciting and unique holes in all of golf. There have been a countless number of exciting moments at this hole over the years. Here are my top 5 moments at hole 17 over the years.

#5: Martin Kaymer saves his round

Clinging to a one shot lead entering the 17th hole, Kaymer left himself a downhill, 28 footer for par. With the light fleeting, he was able to read the putt correctly and pour in the putt to give himself a one shot lead heading into the last hole. He made par there as well and brought home the trophy.

#4: Sergio Garcia clinches his victory

Sergio Garcia stepped up to hole 17 in a playoff with Paul Goydos in the 2008 Players Championship. After Goydos hit his ball in the water at the island green. Garcia stepped up and flushed his wedge.

#3: Fred Couples hole-in-three

In the first round of the 1999 Players Championship, Fred Couples stepped to the tee at the par three 17th in need of a boost to start his round. He mis hit his first shot and it came up short in the water. Angry and ready to move on, Couples quickly tee’d up another ball and hit. This time, the result was different…

#2: Rickie Fowler dialed in

Rickie Fowler played his last 6 holes in 6-under par to force a playoff with Kevin Kisner and Sergio Garcia. After playing the three hole playoff, where both Kisner and Fowler birdied 17, Garcia was eliminated and the others headed back to hole 17 for sudden death. After Kisner hit his shot to about 15 feet, Fowler stepped up and produced one of the most incredible shots in history at the 17th:

#1: Tiger Woods is “better than most”

This shot comes from the 2001 Players Championship in the third round. Tiger Woods was propelled to victory by this challenging putt on the 17th and it remains one of the most memorable calls in all of golf.

Let’s hope this years Player’s Championship can produce some of the same excitement.
