Boston College sits at 0-1 and their performance last week does not have anyone encouraged that this season will bring significant improvement, but with that being said, there’s still hope. This week the Eagles will take on UMass in the Battle of the Bay State and look to get in the win column for the first time this season.
BC’s defense may not be the best in the country this year since they lost some key players, most notably Justin Simmons, but they are still extremely talented. BC’s front seven remains one of the country’s best and is known for their ability to stuff the run. They held Georgia Tech to just 118 rushing yards on 44 attempts giving them less than three yards per carry.
This week’s matchup could prove even easier as UMass’ spread offense is not known for its successes in the running game. The Minutemen also send out an inexperienced quarterback, Ross Comis, who will struggle recognizing BC’s various blitz packages and defensive stunts. UMass struggled against Florida’s defense and should do the same against the Eagles. Expect BC to have an answer for pretty much anything UMass tries on Saturday.
The Eagles’ offense on the other hand is far from good. They did manage to produce over 300 yards but could not convert on 3rd downs and was ineffective in the pass game, per usual. Patrick Towles looked decent at times but letting Darius Wade get snaps this game may not be a bad idea after he started off last season showing potential before an injury ended his season. BC’s top offensive player, Jon Hilliman played well against Georgia Tech rushing for over 100 yards and finding the endzone. He shouldn’t struggle against the Minutemen’s smaller defensive front and the Eagles should look to run the ball most of the game if they hope to win.
The Eagles may have another long season ahead of them but this is a game they should win. They have more talent than the Minutemen and it is as simple as that. Their defense can go toe-to-toe with almost any offense in the country and should handle UMass easily so it all comes down to the offense. IF they play it simple and hand the ball off to Hilliman 20 plus times they should be fine. This isn’t going to be a scoring game but BC should control the clock and run it down UMass’ throat to assure a victory.
PS- Mike Knoll don’t screw this up like you have everything else in my life. Go Eagles!
